Welcome to Saint-Nicolas Church (Église Saint-Nicolas or Nikolaikirche), a charming small Gothic church in Strasbourg, France, steeped in rich historical connections. Built between 1387 and 1454 on the foundation of an 1182 church founded by Knight Walther Spender over a small Roman fort, this site offers a fascinating look into the region's past. Why visit?
The church boasts incredible ties to famous historic figures: Protestant reformer Jean Calvin preached and led services here in 1538, while famed theologian Albert Schweitzer served as pastor from 1900 to 1913. During his time playing the organ and ministering, Schweitzer even officiated the 1908 wedding of Elly Knapp and future West German President Theodor Heuss. Inside, you can still observe the subtle beauty of remaining 15th-century frescoes, along with a 17th-century remodelled interior.
Outside, admire the 1585 tower featuring its distinctive tapering spire, as well as the 1905 façade and sacristy crafted by Émile Salomon, who also designed Strasbourg's Temple Neuf. Though no longer an active parish church due to population shifts in central Strasbourg, it remains affiliated with the EPCAAL and hosts Sunday services for the Renouveau Saint Nicholas Charismatic group.
