After initially holding outdoor services in the "Brush Arbor" along Buffalo Bayou and building an initial sanctuary in 1867, the congregation constructed this current building in 1875.

Once led by former slave Rev. Jack Yates, the church stands as a powerful testament to history. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a UNESCO Slave Route Project site in 2019.

As you explore, you will see a location rich in heritage; as of 2012, it was the only remaining piece of the original Fourth Ward east of Interstate 45.
