National Museum of Slavery

When you visit Morro da Cruz in Luanda, Angola, the National Museum of Slavery (Museu Nacional da Escravatura) offers a deeply historical and sobering experience. Founded in 1977 by the National Institute of Cultural Patrimony, this museum was specifically established to depict the history of slavery in Angola. As you explore the site, you will step onto the former property of Álvaro de Carvalho Matoso, a captain of the presidios of Forte de Ambaca, Fortaleza da Muxima, and Forte de Massangano.

Matoso was recognized as one of the largest slave-traders operating on the African coast during the first half of the 18th century. After his death in 1798, his family and heirs carried on the slave trade here until 1836, when a decree issued by Maria II of Portugal officially prohibited the export of slaves from the Portuguese Empire. Today, when you walk through the venue, you can observe hundreds of historical items that were directly utilized in the slave trade.

Right next to the museum, you will also see the adjoining Capela da Casa Grande, a 17th-century structure where enslaved people were baptized before being forced onto slave ships bound for transport to the Americas. It offers an essential, educational journey into global history.
