Welcome to Parc Henri Matisse, a unique public park and garden oasis situated right in the bustling Euralille district of Lille, located conveniently adjacent to the Lille-Europe station. If you are exploring the city, this serene green space offers a fascinating blend of landscape architecture and ecological experiment. Designed by renowned landscape architect Gilles Clément, the park came into existence after he successfully opposed original plans to erect a multi-purpose urban building on the site.
When you visit, the central centerpiece you must see is Derborence Island. This impressive feature is a 3,500-square-meter plinth rising 7 meters high in the heart of the park. Uniquely constructed using leftover spoil from the building of the nearby train station, the island was deliberately laid out to mimic the distinct shape of Antipodes Island.
As you stroll through the gardens, you are witnessing an evolving natural ecosystem. Researchers monitor this central area every few years to carefully check the diversity of local wildlife and observe whether specific plant species can survive or thrive in this protected setting. It is a wonderful stop to admire innovative design and nature in action right next to the transit hub.
