Located in the historic Old Kampala district of Kampala, Uganda, the Aga Khan Mosque (also known as the Old Kampala Mosque or Ismaili Jamatkhana) serves as an essential place of worship and a central gathering space for the local Muslim community. Recognized as a National Cultural Site of Uganda, this Shia mosque traces its origins to the generous contribution of Aga Khan IV, the spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community. Construction began in the late 1970s, culminating in its official inauguration on October 8, 1978.

When you visit, you will appreciate an exquisite architectural blend of modern and traditional Islamic styles designed by Egyptian architect Abdel Wahed El-Wakil. Outside, admire the large central dome, four minarets topped with crescent moons, intricate calligraphy, geometric patterns, and the surrounding landscaped sahn complete with lush gardens and fountains. Step inside to see the spacious prayer hall, built to accommodate a large number of worshippers for daily prayers, religious gatherings, and Islamic festivals.

The interior features striking decorative elements, including intricate mosaic tilework and grand chandeliers. Beyond its religious role, the landmark draws visitors from all backgrounds to explore Islamic culture and history, while also hosting interfaith dialogue and community outreach programs.
