When you explore the history of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, learning about the Mosque Nur ul-Ihsan offers you a poignant look into the country's past. Situated roughly seven kilometers north of the city center, this historic site holds deep significance for the local Cham community. Originally constructed back in 1813 by Cham believers, it proudly stood as the oldest mosque in the capital for over two centuries.

The structure endured incredible hardship during the dark years of the Khmer Rouge regime, when it was disrespectfully transformed into a pigsty, yet the site survived that tragic era intact. However, if you travel to this location today, you should know that the original historical building no longer stands. In 2018, the ancient mosque was demolished and entirely replaced by the modern KM7 Mosque.

When you visit the site now, you will see a newer structure featuring a distinct Middle Eastern design, which was funded by a generous donation from the Government of Kuwait. Visiting allows you to reflect on the long-standing heritage of the Cham people, honor the resilience of their history through past regimes, and observe the modern architectural transformation that stands in its place today.
