Located at 350 Madison Street in Downtown Detroit's theatre district, the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is a historic 1,731-seat venue steeped in rich cultural history. Built in 1928 as the Wilson Theatre by Matilda Dodge Wilson, who funded the $1.5 million project to host repertory troupes and touring Broadway performers, it remains the only venue in Detroit originally constructed specifically to present live performances.
As you approach the six-story Art Deco exterior designed by William Kapp, take time to admire its striking facade made of orange and tan brick accented with Pewabic tile, travertine, green marble, and stone piers capped with terra cotta theatrical masks. Inside, the theatre historically boasted a Spanish Renaissance interior design alongside a lower-level lounge with a built-in bar.
Over the decades, the historic site hosted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra—when it was known as Detroit Music Hall—and served as the home for the Michigan Opera Theatre, in addition to screening Cinerama films. Designated a Michigan State Historic Site and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this iconic venue offers a authentic glimpse into Detroit's vibrant architectural and performing arts heritage.
