Grand Mosque

When you visit Kuwait City, you cannot miss the Grand Mosque ( المسجد الكبير ), the largest mosque in the entire country. Spanning an impressive total area of 45,000 square meters, with the primary structure covering 20,000 square meters, this grand architectural landmark offers a striking look at Islamic design. Construction began in 1979 and was completed in 1986/1987 (1407 AH) on Eid ul-Fitr.

As you explore, head to the northwest corner to admire the soaring minaret, which thoughtfully reflects classic Andalusian architecture. Step inside the expansive main prayer hall—measuring 72 meters wide on all sides—where 144 windows flood the space with soft natural lighting through grand teakwood doors. Look upward to behold the massive central dome, measuring 26 meters in diameter and rising 43 meters high, exquisitely decorated with Asma al-Husna, the 99 names of God.

The main prayer hall holds up to 10,000 men, while a dedicated separate hall accommodates up to 950 women. You will also discover a dedicated 350-square-meter library filled with Islamic reference books and documents, as well as a convenient 5-level underground car park beneath the eastern courtyard built for up to 550 vehicles.
