Al Jum’ah Mosque

When you visit Medina in Saudi Arabia's Hejazi region, you can experience deep historical roots at Al Jum'ah Mosque, also known locally as Masjid Bani Salim, Masjid Al-Wadi, Masjid Al-Qubayb, or Masjid Atikah. Local tradition holds that this special location near Wadi Ranuna' is where the Islamic prophet Muhammad and his companions performed their very first Salatul-Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) during their historic migration from Mecca to Medina. Situated just 900 meters (3,000 feet) north of Quba Mosque and 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) south of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, this sacred site offers a peaceful stop along your journey through Medina.

Originally constructed simply from rocks, the mosque underwent several rebuilds throughout history by Umayyad, Abbasid, Ottoman, and other rulers. While an earlier historical structure featured a small red brick dome and an attached eastern yard, a major 1988 renovation by King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz modernized the site. Reopened to the public in 1991, the current mosque complex features one main dome, four smaller domes, and space for 650 pilgrims.

Inside, the site houses a female prayer room, library, Qur'an school, and residences for the imam and muezzin, providing an enriching encounter with living Islamic heritage.
