Located 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) southwest of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Abyār ʿAlī, Medina, Masjid Dhu al-Hulayfah—also known as Mīqāt Dhu al-Ḥulayfah or the Mosque of the Tree—is a sacred destination you will encounter west of Wadi al-'Aqiq. As the second-largest miqat mosque, it marks the historical site where the Prophet Muhammad entered the state of ihram for 'Umrah following the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, defining it as the designated miqat for pilgrims undertaking Hajj or Umrah from Medina. Originally constructed under Umayyad governor Umar II ibn 'Abdulaziz and significantly expanded under King Fahd, this expansive complex offers rich history and striking architecture.
When you visit, you will explore a 36,000-square-meter enclosure housing a 6,000-square-meter square mosque. Wander through two sets of arched galleries featuring long domes that frame a spacious 1,000-square-meter yard. At the center of the mosque, you can view a natural spring of water sheltered beneath a dome.
Look up to admire 13 roof domes and five surrounding minarets, including a distinct 64-meter (210-foot) minaret that transitions from a square base to a diagonal round top amid peaceful pathways, galleries, and trees.
