Located in Togo's capital of Lomé, the Independence Monument stands as a tribute to the nation's freedom from France, achieved on 27 April 1960. You will find this significant landmark situated near the Palais des congrès de Lomé, which is also home to the Togo National Museum.

The monument was contributed to by Paul Ahyi, the renowned Togolese artist famously known for designing the country's national flag. As you explore the site, you will see a white bust of a woman holding up a cooking pot, positioned right in front of a striking silhouette of a figure raising their arms as if breaking free from shackles.

Take time to examine the sides of this silhouette, where inspiring French inscriptions are carved directly into the structure. One side proclaims that the Togolese nation was born through the faith and sacrifice of its people, while another displays the national motto alongside the date of the proclamation of independence and the words: "Work, Liberty, Homeland." It is a compelling artistic and historical stop for anyone visiting the city to reflect on Togo's journey to independence.
