Guatemala City rests above the ancient ruins of Kaminaljuyu, a major Pre-Columbian site of the Maya civilization occupied from 1500 BC to 1200 AD. While once an expansive complex encompassing around 200 platforms and pyramidal mounds across five square kilometers, modern real estate developments have swallowed up most of the ancient city. Today, you can visit a preserved 0.5-square-kilometer park containing a fraction of the original Classic Period center.

To be completely honest, the extant remains are distinctly unimpressive and suffer from ongoing destruction due to their urban location and fragile hardened-adobe construction. However, visiting offers you a unique window into one of Mesoamerica's greatest archaeological centers and its seminal role in early Maya culture. As you explore the park, you will see surviving earthen mounds and platforms that once anchored a bustling gateway capital.

Throughout its history, this site featured sophisticated civic institutions, loom-weaving workshops, obsidian toolmaking centers, and vibrant sculptures depicting deities like the Principal Bird Deity, jaguars, and serpents. While time and city expansion have reshaped the landscape, walking this historic ground connects you directly to centuries of rich archaeological discovery, royal tombs, and deep Maya traditions.
