Nykirken 🇳🇴

You will find Nykirken, a large white stone cruciform church, sitting gracefully at Nykirkeallmenningen square between Strandgaten road and Vågen bay in Bergen's Nordnes area. Originally consecrated in 1622 as Holy Trinity Church, it earned the nickname "the new church"—a moniker that stuck because repeated fires led to constant rebuilds. Today, the building showcases a striking Baroque and Rococo restoration based on 18th-century designs by Johan Joachim Reichborn, completed after a WWII explosion in 1944 severely damaged the site.

Beyond its resilient architectural story, Nykirken holds historic significance as an 1814 election church for Norway's very first national elections. Inside, you will experience a unique atmosphere, as Nykirken serves as Bergen's "Children's Cathedral." The light-filled sanctuary features 750 seats, including high-sided box pews and painted wooden benches designed for younger visitors. As you walk through, look closely at the vibrant decorations created by local children, including hand-painted icons, whimsical hanging mobiles, and stained-glass-effect paintings fitted into double-glazed windows.

Do not miss the dramatic Baptismal Angel suspended overhead, a massive carved figure that lowers electrically from the ceiling holding a baptismal bowl during ceremonies. It offers a warm, inspiring stop along the harbor.
