Located on Kotsyubinskiy Street/Sholom Aleichem Street in Dnipro, Ukraine, the Golden Rose Synagogue is a historic Orthodox Jewish house of worship that offers you a compelling look into local heritage and resilience. Originally built in 1868 when the city was known as Yekaterinoslav, the synagogue endured a tumultuous period starting in 1924, when it was repurposed into a workers' club and warehouse with a Soviet seal installed above its portico. Returned to the Jewish community in 1996, the site underwent a dramatic reconstruction in 1999 led by local architect A.
Dolnik, alongside Israeli artist Frank Meisler, who designed the foyer, prayer hall, and Holy Ark. When you visit, you will see Meisler's intricate representation of golden roses above the sanctuary entrance and the Aaron haKodesh doors illustrating the Ten Commandments. Between the lobby and sanctuary, take time to explore the small rotunda, where the Sh’ma Israel prayer wraps around the walls in Hebrew and Russian until both scripts meet.
Right next door, you can extend your visit at the adjacent Menorah center, which opened in October 2012 and houses the "Tkumah" (rebirth) museum alongside a library, classrooms, and community services.
