Located in the Arbor Hills neighborhood of northern Tallahassee, Florida, Velda Mound offers you a quiet look into ancient Native American history. Built around AD 1450 by peoples of the Fort Walton culture—ancestors of the Apalachee—this site features a small rectangular platform mound that once supported the residence of a village priest-chief. Surrounded by a modest plaza and village grounds, it served as a central gather place for nearby farming families who cultivated maize, beans, and squash on the fertile local soils.
Named after mid-twentieth-century dairy pastures that once covered the area, the 1.91-acre tract is now preserved as a passive neighborhood pocket park managed by the State of Florida. When you visit, you can stroll along a shaded mulch trail framed by scattered second-growth longleaf pines and live oaks. A post-and-chain barrier protects the delicate earthwork from damage, while benches and picnic tables invite you to relax outdoors.
