You will find Emperor Valley Zoo nestled on 7.2 acres in Port of Spain, conveniently situated just north of Queen's Park Savannah and west of the Royal Botanic Gardens. As the only public zoo in Trinidad and Tobago, it offers a fascinating look at both local wildlife and exotic creatures from around the globe. Named after the vibrant blue emperor butterfly that once filled this valley, the zoo originally opened in 1952 with just 127 animals.
Today, thanks to a TTD $56 million major upgrade supported by the government and the Zoological Society of Trinidad and Tobago, you can explore modern exhibits housing over 2,300 animals across more than 200 species. As you wander through the lush gardens and serene ponds, you can admire African giraffes, lions, and Asian tigers—including white Bengal tigers. Be sure to spot native species as well, such as ocelots, caiman, macaws, and the striking national bird, the scarlet ibis.
With diverse attractions ranging from a dedicated reptile house and an aquarium to a peaceful deer park, primate areas, and even llamas, this upgraded destination gives you a rich, accessible glimpse into animal life right in the heart of the capital city.
