When visiting Porto Alegre's historic center at Marechal Deodoro Square, step into the Piratini Palace, the seat of the Executive Branch of Rio Grande do Sul and official residence of thirty-eight governors. Constructed to replace the 1773 Clay Palace, this neoclassical landmark features a rich history, including surviving a 1961 bombing order during the Legality Campaign. Outside, marvel at facade sculptures representing Agriculture and Industry created by Paul Landowski, famous for the Christ the Redeemer statue.
As you step inside, you will admire a sumptuous French marble staircase, a bust of Getúlio Vargas, and O Laçador sculpture by Antonio Caringi. Guided weekday visits take you through the Entrance Hall to view a 1919 Ford Model T and a 1929 German car, then up the grand stairs into the Negrinho do Pastoreio Hall. Here, glance at chandeliers replicating those at the Palace of Versailles alongside murals by Italian painter Aldo Locatelli illustrating state history.
Further areas include the inner courtyard displaying Landowski's sculpture A Primavera, gardens featuring an Egyptian-themed fountain, and the 1971 Crioulo shed showcasing traditional gaucho culture and cuisine.
