Completed in 1983, this large mosque complex was built on the initiative of then Crown Prince Mohammed, now King Mohammed VI. It honors his grandfather, Mohammed V, who delivered a historic address in Tangier back in 1947.

According to intriguing local lore, a visiting Kuwaiti sheikh provided the funding for the mosque after feeling displeased that the bell tower of the nearby Catholic Cathedral dominated the neighborhood skyline, wishing instead for a Muslim tower to surpass it. Whether or not the legend is entirely true, Kuwait's financial support is officially recognized right outside in the renamed square, Place du Koweit.

Beyond its soaring minaret and rich story, you can see a complex that serves as a major civic and religious hub. It houses a library, the regional Ulama council, a local delegation of the Moroccan Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs, and a theological institute and boarding school named after Ibn Atiyah al-Andalusi.
