When you visit Tangier, Morocco, step into the Church of Saint Andrew, a unique Anglican place of worship built on land donated by Sultan Hassan I in 1880. Completed in 1894 and consecrated in 1905, this historic landmark offers you a captivating glimpse into Tangier's rich, multicultural past. You will immediately notice its extraordinary Moorish architectural style, highlighted by an eye-catching belltower shaped like a traditional minaret overlooking the adjacent cemetery.

Inside, you can admire an interior designed as a fusion of numerous styles, most notably Moorish craftsmanship. As you explore, look for the church's compelling memorial plaques, including one on the western side honoring Emily Keene, the British humanitarian who introduced the cholera vaccine to Morocco. Another plaque commemorates Thomas Kirby-Green, a figure from the famous Great Escape.

Art enthusiasts will appreciate that this striking building was famously captured in Henri Matisse’s 1913 painting, Landscape Viewed from a Window. Outside, take time to walk through the churchyard, which serves as the final resting place for notable historical figures such as diplomat Walter Burton Harris, antique collector Christopher Gibbs, Moroccan Army commander Sir Harry MacLean, and British gangster Paul Lund.
