Originally designed by Robert Gornall with office and retail space completed in 1926, the theater was completed in 1927 by Austrian-born designer John Eberson after being acquired by the Universal Film Company. When you visit, you will experience one of the few remaining atmospheric theatres still in operation, crafted in a striking Italian Renaissance style.

Inside, the main hall replicates an outdoor Mediterranean courtyard beneath an enchanting nighttime sky ceiling complete with clouds, mechanical flying birds, and twinkling stars. Historically famous for introducing Kansas City's first suburban first-run films and its unique 1931 Fragratone fragrance system, the venue evolved from hosting movies and vaudeville to becoming a premier concert destination. After closing in 1989, a $15 million restoration brought Eberson's colorful original details back to life while adding 33,000 square feet of modern banquet, lobby, bar, and office space.
