When you visit Plzeň in the Czech Republic, you cannot miss the Great Synagogue (Velká synagoga). As the second largest synagogue in Europe and the third largest in the world, this historic site offers you a powerful look into Czech Jewish heritage. Originally designed in a Gothic style, the plan was rejected because city councillors worried its towers would compete with the nearby Cathedral of St.
Bartholomew. A revised 1890 design lowered the towers, creating a fascinating architectural fusion completed in 1893. Inside, you will encounter a bewildering blend of styles: Russian Orthodox-style onion domes, an Arabic-style ceiling, and a distinctly Indian-looking Torah ark, all decorated with Oriental details and a giant Star of David.
Spared from destruction during World War II when it was used as a storage facility, the synagogue later fell into disrepair under communist rule after closing in 1973. Following extensive restorations from 1995 to 1998 and interior renovations between 2019 and 2022, it remains a vibrant landmark. Today, you can explore the central hall to attend concerts or view temporary wall exhibitions, while the local Jewish community continues holding regular services in the former winter prayer room.
