Located along the eastern bank of the Tigris River in modern-day Mosul, northern Iraq, Nineveh offers you a glimpse into an ancient Near Eastern metropolis that once served as the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. Founded as early as 6000 BC during the late Neolithic period, this site grew to become the largest city in the world for about fifty years until its fall in 612 BC.
When you visit these extensive ruins, which span 750 hectares enclosed by a 12-kilometer fortification wall, you can explore two main archaeological mounds bisected by the Khosr River. To the north sits Tell Kuyunjiq, the acropolis area, while to the south lies Tell Nabī Yūnus, home to the shrine and mosque dedicated to the Prophet Jonah alongside an underground palace.
Although many sculptures are now housed in global museums, you can still trace the immense footprint of King Sennacherib's urban planning, including his massive South West Palace foundation, former city wall routes, and historical gate locations. Visiting Nineveh connects you directly with thousands of years of Mesopotamian history, from early copper smelting and Uruk trade connections to legendary Neo-Assyrian architectural achievements.
