Mosul Grand Mosque

Located in the Taqafah district of Mosul, Iraq, along the banks of the Tigris River and near the ancient Nineveh archaeological site, the Mosul Grand Mosque stands as an evocative symbol of resilience and history. Originally known as the Saddam Mosque, its construction first began during the regime of Saddam Hussein, but ongoing political instability repeatedly halted progress. When eventually completed, this impressive Sunni landmark will hold the title of the largest mosque in Mosul.

As you visit, you will witness a structure shaped by decades of conflict and renewal. During the 2017 Battle of Mosul, the unfinished complex suffered significant damage at the hands of ISIL forces. However, hope for its future was revitalized in February 2019, when the Nineveh Governorate municipality announced that construction had officially resumed, backed by a generous 50 million US dollar grant from the United Arab Emirates.

Although no final completion date has been set and the building remains incomplete as of 2025, taking time to view this vast site offers you a unique vantage point on Iraq's layered modern history, monumental architecture, and ongoing rebuilding efforts along the scenic riverbank in the heart of Nineveh.
