Church Our Lady of Mount Carmel 🇧🇷

Set in the historic center of Belém, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo) is a remarkable 18th-century landmark rich in Brazilian history. Step inside this national heritage site, listed by IPHAN in 1941, to experience a captivating blend of architectural history and sacred art. The original 17th-century Carmelite convent site underwent significant shifts over the centuries, including a major redesign by Italian architect Antonio Landi after a pre-carved Portuguese stone facade arrived in Belém and required structural alterations to the nave.

When you visit, you will marvel at Belém's only stone facade—a sober Pombaline design carved from lioz stone in Portugal between 1750 and 1756. Inside, look up to admire the central nave ceiling, painted sky blue with gold stars, and the walls decorated using the scagliola technique. Don't miss the high altar's magnificent local gilded woodwork featuring acanthus leaves and allegorical birds, flanked by a wooden altar cloaked in ornate Portuguese silver.

Outside in the atrium, pay your respects where prominent regional historical figures are buried.
