Kanpur Memorial Church 🇮🇳

When you visit Kanpur, India, you can explore the Kanpur Memorial Church, also known as the All Souls' Church. Belonging to the Church of North India, a united Protestant denomination, this historic site was completed and consecrated in 1876. It was built to commemorate the British soldiers who fell during the Siege of Cawnpore in 1857, following an initial proposal from the United Society Partners in the Gospel. Located on Albert Lane near the Cawnpore Club at the boundary of the Kanpur Cantonment, the structure offers a distinct architectural stop.

You will admire the church's striking Lombardic Gothic style, designed by Walter Granville, an architect of the East Bengal Railway. The building is attractively executed in bright red brick detailed with polychrome dressings. To the east, you can enter the memorial garden, which is accessible through a single gateway. Inside the garden, you will see a handsome carved Gothic screen designed by Henry Yule.

At its center stands a beautifully carved angel figure sculpted by Baron Carlo Marochetti. The angel features crossed arms and holds palons as symbols of peace, created in memory of the victims of the Bibighar massacre.
