Deir el-Medina 🇪🇬

Step into Deir el-Medina, an extraordinary ancient Egyptian workmen's village located on the west bank of the Nile across from modern-day Luxor. Nestled in a small natural amphitheatre near the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was home to the middle-class artisans, stone-cutters, plasterers, and scribes who built and decorated royal tombs during the 18th to 20th Dynasties (ca. 1550–1080 BC).

Known anciently as Set Maat ("Place of Truth"), the site offers an unmatched look into daily life, social interactions, and working conditions spanning nearly four hundred years. When you visit, you can explore the remains of mudbrick houses built along a narrow main road, where up to 68 homes once stood with whitewashed walls, high windows, and entrance rooms featuring mudbrick shrines or birthing platforms. Beyond the settlement layout, you will see the community's own rock-cut tombs adorned with small pyramids—crafted by the ancient world's finest artisans during their days off—as well as a Ptolemaic temple dedicated to Hathor, which was later converted into a Christian monastery.
