Construction on this crossing began in January 1994 by the contractor Gradis – Engineering Company Ljubljana, p. o. The project was jointly funded through investments from both the Republic of Slovenia and the urban municipality of Maribor. On October 19, 1996, the bridge was officially opened to traffic during a ceremony led by then-mayor Alojz Križman.
