Passerelle de Bessengué

When you visit Douala, Cameroon, make sure to experience the Passerelle de Bessengué, a vibrant public artwork and wooden bridge featuring a multi-colored iron handrail. Designed by Cameroonian artist Alioum Moussa and inaugurated during the Salon Urbain de Douala in 2007, this functional sculpture connects block 1 of Bessengue to one of Douala's busiest roads. As you walk across, you will notice the handrail's distinct painted colors, each thoughtfully chosen to symbolize people from different ethnic groups holding hands.

Selected through an artistic contest coordinated by doual’art alongside the local Development Community of Bessengue-Akwa, Moussa's design sparked community discussion and self-reflection regarding historical conflicts between autochthonous and non-native populations, serving as a lasting symbol of peaceful collaboration for future generations. Visiting this site allows you to see how public art directly integrates into daily community life. At the entrance of the neighborhood, the bridge forms a bustling square known as Vallée Bessengue.

Here, you can observe local life unfolding alongside other art installations, as children gather to play, young people meet to date, and women shop in this vibrant gathering place that facilitates vehicle and pedestrian movement while showcasing urban art.
