Behram Pasha Mosque 🇹🇷

Set in Diyarbakır in southeast Turkey, the 16th-century Behram Pasha Mosque offers you a captivating glimpse into Ottoman architectural craftsmanship with a distinct local flair. Commissioned by Ottoman governor-general Behram Pasha and completed around 1572–73, this remarkable site is believed to have involved the famous imperial architect Sinan, alongside skilled local masons. As you approach the mosque, you will immediately notice the striking north façade, constructed with alternating layers of dramatic black and white stone.

Before stepping inside, inspect the octagonal drinking fountain featuring a pyramidal roof and braided black-and-white columns, as well as the five-domed double portico and single corner minaret. Once inside the main prayer hall, look up to admire the impressive 15.9-meter (52-foot) dome resting gracefully on eight pointed arches and a sixteen-sided drum lined with windows. The lower walls are adorned with beautiful, large square polychrome underglazed tiles framed by detailed rectangular borders, believed to be crafted locally in Diyarbakır in the style of İznik tilework.
