If you are exploring the Flensburg Fjord in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, a visit to the historic site of Ryd Abbey—also known as Rüde Abbey—offers a fascinating journey through medieval history. First settled by Cistercians from Esrum Abbey in 1210, this monastery prospered under rigorous discipline after replacing a disorderly Benedictine community. At its height, the impressive precinct measured 350 meters by 200 meters, housing a church, cemetery, hospital, guest house, farm, and lay brothers' wing.
The abbey gained fame as the birthplace of the Annales Ryenses, a key medieval Danish historical chronicle ending in 1288, and notorious notoriety in 1259 when Abbot Arnfast was accused of poisoning King Christopher I of Denmark with communion wine. Following its suppression during the Reformation in 1538, the monastery fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1582. Today, Duke John the Younger's grand Glücksburg Castle occupies the original abbey site, built directly from its salvaged stones.
Archaeological excavations, including major digs beneath the drained castle lake in 2005, have uncovered the foundations of the monastic church, original buildings, cemetery, and numerous medieval artefacts, allowing you to walk where ancient history truly happened.
