Located in the Chengguan District of Lanzhou City within Gansu province, China, the Xiguan Mosque—also known as the West Cross Mosque Lanzhou—offers you a unique glimpse into the region's rich architectural evolution. Originally built during the reign of the Wanli Emperor in the Ming dynasty, this historical site underwent two major reconstructions during the Qing dynasty before being rebuilt in 1990 with an added dome and four pagoda-topped minarets. In 2023, the local government transformed the site into a minimalist style, removing the dome and minarets as part of a national sinicization effort.
Today, when you visit, you will encounter a structure designed to blend Arabic Islamic and minimalist styles, covering a total area of 467 square metres. Make sure to observe the main prayer hall, which spans 141 square metres and uniquely combines classical Chinese and Arabic architectural features. The overall architecture was carefully intended to mimic and echo the iconic style of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
