Why Lanzhou

Lanzhou is the capital and largest city of Gansu Province, serving as a major regional hub in northwestern China. Situated at the geographical center of China's landmass, it sits at an elevation of 1,600 meters along the upper reaches of the Yellow River. The city's urban footprint stretches along the river valley, hemmed in by the Qilian Ranges alongside Mount Pingliang and Mount Kongtong to its north and south. In addition to its role as a key transport nexus connecting eastern China to lands further west, Lanzhou is a prominent industrial center for heavy industry and petrochemicals, as well as a primary site for higher education and scientific research.

Historically, Lanzhou served as a vital crossing point on the Yellow River and a crucial stop along the ancient Northern Silk Road. Originally inhabited by the Western Qiangs, the region fell under the control of the State of Qin in the 6th century BC. Under the Han Dynasty, it became Jincheng commandery, and sections of the Great Wall were extended into the area to protect the settlement. Over subsequent centuries, the city changed hands among various dynasties and tribal states—including the Northern Wei, Sui, Tang, Western Xia, Song, Jin, and Mongol Empire—before officially taking the name Lanzhou during the Qing Dynasty in 1656. In the 20th century, the city played a significant role as a supply hub and air-defense location during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

As the main tourism gateway to Gansu Province and the Hexi Corridor, Lanzhou features several notable cultural and natural sights. Within the urban area, historic remains of the Great Wall still stand. Five Spring Mountain Park, positioned on the slopes of Gaolan Mountain, is known for its natural springs, historic architecture, and ancient Buddhist temples. Visitors can also explore Baita Mountain Park, set at an elevation of 1,700 meters, or cross the river via Zhongshan Bridge, which stands as the first permanent bridge built across the Yellow River. Additional points of interest include the Lanzhou Botanical Garden in the Anning District, the expansive Xiguan Mosque, the Lutusi ancient government complex, and the forested slopes of Xinglong Mountain.

Lanzhou experiences a temperate, semi-arid climate characterized by hot summers and cold, dry winters. Most of its annual precipitation occurs between May and October. The city is a major transit node, linked by extensive rail networks and highways that historically and modernly connect northwestern China with surrounding regions.
