Welcome to Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, commonly known as Kalakshetra, Northeast India's largest cultural congregation and a major tourist spot in the Panjabari area of Guwahati, Assam. Built in the 1990s and named after medieval poet-playwright and reformer Srimanta Sankardev, this impressive complex celebrates the art, history, and vibrant ethnic heritage of Assam and the north-eastern region. As you wander the grounds, you will discover structures reflecting traditional Assamese designs, alongside surrounding walls adorned with murals depicting Bihu dances and historic war moments.
Explore the Central Museum to view authentic cultural artifacts and articles used by various local ethnic groups, and stop by a replica of Sivasagar's famous Ahom Amphitheatre, the Rang Ghar, right at the museum's entrance corridor. Walk through the Artists' Village—a major highlight showcasing rural Assam life through lifelike statues and thatched huts—or visit the Bhupen Hazarika museum. You can inspect rare manuscripts at the Sahitya Bhavan library, view art exhibitions at the Lalit-Kala Bhavan, or enjoy a traditional dance performance at the 2,000-seat open-air theatre framed by views of the Khasi Hills.
With eateries, places of worship, emporiums, workshops, and a heritage park, it offers a complete cultural immersion.
