Step into history at the Cantina della Sfida, a historic building located in the Santa Maria district within the medieval historic center of Barletta, Italy. Nestled among narrow streets and stone buildings, this structure reflects the typical architecture of southern Italian medieval taverns. Historically known as the "Osteria di Veleno," it served as an inn where travelers and soldiers gathered during the Italian Wars.

According to local tradition, its lower level hosted the formal challenge leading to the famous 1503 Challenge of Barletta (Disfida di Barletta). Today, this former tavern operates as a museum dedicated to that historic event. As you explore the interconnected rooms across different levels, you will admire 15th-century Apulian stone masonry, wide round arches showing Romanesque influence, ribbed vaulting, massive stone pillars, and traditional terracotta brick flooring.

The atmosphere transports you back in time with wrought-iron chandeliers, wall-mounted lanterns mimicking Renaissance torchlight, a large hooded stone fireplace, full suits of armor, and draped Spanish and Imperial flags. On the walls, you will discover the coats of arms representing the 13 Italian and 13 French knights who faced off in the legendary duel. Purchased by Barletta's municipality in 1938, it remains a compelling site of military honor.
