Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary 🇨🇿

When you visit České Budějovice, you cannot miss the Church of the Sacrifice of the Virgin Mary, located on historical Piaristic square. Founded alongside the city itself in 1265, this monumental early Gothic three-nave basilica was initially completed around 1300 and offers you a remarkable journey through centuries of architectural history. Outside, you will admire its preserved early Gothic exterior, featuring lanced windows with intricate tracery, massive plain supporting columns, and peak niches, alongside a stone frog under the roof tied to a local end-of-the-world legend.

As you step inside, you will discover a cross-vaulted interior supported by six pairs of columns, decorated with carved human head brackets and vegetable motifs. The true highlight of your visit lies in the church's extremely valuable 14th-century wall murals. Opposite the southern entrance, you can view a unique dual-mural depicting the Virgin Mary, Christ, and a kneeling donator.

Just to its left stands the largest mural in the Czech Republic: a breathtaking, nearly ten-meter-tall image of Saint Christopher. Complete with subtle Baroque and Rococo additions, a connected cloister, and a small Baroque chapel along the southern wall, this fascinating site delivers an authentic slice of medieval history directly to you.
