Why České Budějovice

České Budějovice serves as the commercial, political, and cultural capital of the South Bohemian Region in the Czech Republic. Positioned roughly 120 kilometers south of Prague, the city lies in the valley of the Vltava River at its confluence with the Malše. Home to approximately 97,000 residents, it houses the Diocese of České Budějovice and the University of South Bohemia. The city is widely recognized for its centuries-old brewing tradition, anchored by the famous Budweiser Budvar Brewery.

Geographically, the city sits largely on a low-lying plain, though its eastern suburbs and exclave reach higher elevations up to 560 meters above sea level. To the northwest, the municipal territory features an extensive network of fishponds, including the 47.2-hectare Novohaklovský rybník and protected natural habitats within the Vrbenské rybníky nature reserve. The area experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, characterized by dry, murky winters, dry autumns, and warm, rainy summers.

Established in 1265 as a fortified royal town by King Ottokar II, the settlement grew rapidly through commerce, trade crafts, and regional silver mining. After suffering extensive destruction during a major fire in 1641, much of the urban core was rebuilt in the Baroque style. The 19th century brought rapid industrial expansion, marked by the construction of a pioneering horse-drawn railway to Linz and the arrival of major manufacturing enterprises such as the Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth pencil company.

The preserved historic center is designated as an urban monument reservation. At its heart lies Přemysl Otakar II Square, one of the largest plazas in the country, encircled by arcaded Renaissance and Baroque houses built over Gothic foundations. The center of the square features the 18th-century Samson Fountain, the largest fountain in the Czech Republic. Notable landmarks include the 72-meter 16th-century Black Tower, the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, a Dominican Monastery, and remnant 14th-century fortification structures such as the Rabenštejn and Iron Maiden Towers.

Cultural events in the city include the long-running Země Živitelka agricultural fair held at the municipal exhibition grounds, and the town has been designated a European Capital of Culture for 2028. Recreational facilities include the historic Swimming Stadium, a protected cultural monument equipped with indoor, diving, and outdoor pools.

As a primary transportation hub, České Budějovice is served by major roads including the D3 motorway and European routes E55 and E49. Railway connections link the main station directly to Prague, Plzeň, and Linz, while public transit within the city is operated by municipal bus and trolleybus networks. Domestic and international air services are supported by a nearby airport located southwest of the city.
