Why Hradec Králové

Hradec Králové is a major regional capital in the eastern part of the Czech Republic, situated roughly 95 kilometers east of Prague. Positioned in the lowlands along the East Elbe Table, the city sits at the natural meeting point of the Elbe and Orlice rivers. Its surrounding territory features a flat landscape interspersed with small fishponds, with Slatina hill marking the highest point in the area at 281 meters above sea level.

First recorded in historical texts as a castle site in the 11th century, the city developed into a designated dowry town for Bohemian queens starting in 1306, a status reflected in its name, which translates to "queen's castle." Over the centuries, Hradec Králové survived major fires, the Hussite Wars, and occupation during the Thirty Years' War. In the late 18th century, a massive military fortress reshaped its layout and riverbeds. Following the removal of these fortifications, the city underwent significant modern replanning in the early 20th century under notable architects such as Jan Kotěra and Josef Gočár, earning recognition for its outstanding urban design.

Today, the city serves as a prominent cultural and educational hub. Visitors can explore the well-preserved historic center, protected as an urban monument reservation, which centers around the main square of Velké náměstí. Surrounding streets feature impressive examples of Art Nouveau and Functionalist architecture. Key historic landmarks include the 14th-century Gothic Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and the neighboring 16th-century Renaissance White Tower, a 72-meter structure offering elevated views over the area. Cultural institutions include the Museum of Eastern Bohemia, housed in a landmark early 20th-century building, alongside the long-standing Klicpera Theatre and the Drak Theatre.

Hradec Králové experiences a humid continental climate, with average monthly temperatures ranging from −0.6 °C in January to 19.8 °C in July. Transport connections to the city are well established. The D11 motorway links the municipality directly to Prague, complemented by several major regional roads. Train service operates via five local rail stations, including a central hub, while intra-city transit relies on a network of public buses and trolleybuses.
