Perched dramatically over the River Ness in Scotland's Highlands, Inverness Castle is a striking red sandstone landmark steeped in centuries of dramatic history. While a succession of fortresses has occupied this location since 1057—playing a role in royal sumptuary history, clan conflicts, and Shakespeare's *Macbeth*—the present-day structure was completed in the 19th century. Designed by architect William Burn and extended by Thomas Brown II, the site originally served as a sheriff court and prison.

Today, this Category A listed building has been transformed following a major renovation project. When you visit, you will experience the Inverness Castle Experience, which offers an interactive journey exploring Highland history and culture. You can admire its castellated architecture, featuring a symmetrical seven-bay main frontage, round-headed doorways, and outer castellated towers set behind bastioned enclosing walls designed by Joseph Mitchell.

Beyond its physical beauty and rich past, the iconic structure even graced the reverse side of the Royal Bank of Scotland's £50 note introduced in 2005. Positioned in Inverness, Highland, it provides a fascinating stop to connect with real and literary Scottish heritage.
