Why Dallas

Dallas, located in northern Texas, is a major urban center and the seat of Dallas County. Situated along the Trinity River, the city rests on mostly flat terrain between 450 and 550 feet above sea level, though noticeable elevation changes occur along the White Rock Escarpment in the southwest. Spanning nearly 386 square miles, the city extends into neighboring Collin, Denton, Kaufman, and Rockwall counties, anchoring a massive inland metropolitan region alongside nearby Fort Worth.

Indigenous tribes including the Caddo, Wichita, and Comanche originally inhabited the territory prior to Spanish, French, and Mexican claims. Surveyed in 1839 and permanently established in 1841 by John Neely Bryan near three forks of the Trinity River, Dallas was formally incorporated in 1856. The arrival of major rail lines transformed the community into a thriving trade hub for cotton, cattle, and East Texas oil. During World War II, the city became a major manufacturing site for military aircraft and vehicles, and in 1963, it became the site of President John F. Kennedy's assassination at Dealey Plaza.

Central Dallas is centered on Downtown and surrounded by vibrant districts such as Uptown, Oak Lawn, and Victory Park. Downtown features prominent sub-districts including the West End Historic District and the Arts District, alongside striking modernist and postmodernist architecture like Reunion Tower, I. M. Pei's Dallas City Hall, and the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Historic architecture is widely preserved across the city, including Victorian and neoclassical homes on Swiss Avenue and prairie-style residences in Munger Place.

Neighborhoods across Dallas offer a variety of cultural and natural features. East of Downtown lies Deep Ellum, a district renowned for its arts focus, while North Oak Cliff to the southwest features the Bishop Arts District and hilly residential communities. To the south, Fair Park serves as the venue for the annual State Fair of Texas held from late September to mid-October, and the Great Trinity Forest along the Trinity River encompasses extensive wetlands and habitat.

Dallas functions as a major transportation junction supported by an extensive infrastructure network. Four primary interstate highways converge within the city alongside an outer loop highway, complemented by urban rail and bus services managed by Dallas Area Rapid Transit. Regional and international travel is anchored by Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, one of the world's busiest air travel hubs.
