Why Indianapolis

Indianapolis, colloquially referred to as Indy, is the capital of Indiana and the seat of Marion County. Located along the west fork of the White River in the state's central till plain region, it is the fourth-most populous state capital in the United States and covers 368 square miles. The city is officially styled the "Crossroads of America," a moniker highlighting its history as a major transit hub with close proximity to prominent North American markets.

Indigenous populations, including the Miami and Lenape nations, inhabited the region prior to ceding the territory through the 1818 Treaty of St. Mary's. Established in 1821 as a planned seat for state government, the town was surveyed on a one-square-mile grid by Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Fordham. Its name combines the state's name with the Greek word for city, polis. Early growth accelerated with the opening of the federally funded National Road in 1827 and the arrival of key rail lines, including the opening of the world's first Union Station in 1853.

During the American Civil War, Indianapolis served as a primary military logistics base for Union forces. Following the war, the city grew into a prominent manufacturing center, becoming a major hub for rail transportation and pork packing, as well as the home of major commercial enterprises such as Eli Lilly and Company. In 1970, a city-county consolidation known as Unigov expanded the municipality's geographic footprint by over 300 square miles, significantly increasing its population and streamlining local administration.

The city is widely recognized for its sports industry and culture. It is internationally famous for hosting the Indianapolis 500, held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1911, which ranks as the world's largest single-day sporting event. Additionally, Indianapolis maintains niche markets in auto racing and amateur athletics, supports two major league sports franchises, and features major venues built during municipal efforts to expand sports tourism. Outside of Washington, D.C., the city holds the largest collection of monuments dedicated to war casualties and veterans in the nation.

Visitors can explore a wide variety of cultural and educational destinations, including the world's largest children's museum and eight university campuses. Prominent public developments include the Canal and White River State Park, Circle Centre Mall, Victory Field, Gainbridge Fieldhouse, designated Cultural Districts, and the pedestrian-oriented Indianapolis Cultural Trail. Central civic landmarks include the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, dedicated in 1902 as an unofficial symbol of the city.
