Why Minneapolis

Minneapolis, the seat of Hennepin County, is the most populous city in Minnesota, housing more than 400,000 residents. Situated near the state's eastern border in central Minnesota, the city straddles both banks of the Upper Mississippi River and directly adjoins Saint Paul, the state capital. Collectively, these two municipalities and their surrounding suburban area form a metropolitan region known as the Twin Cities, home to over three million people. The landscape rests on a relatively flat expanse over an artesian aquifer, experiencing a climate characterized by cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers.

Often referred to as the "City of Lakes," Minneapolis features abundant natural water resources throughout its urban layout. Within its limits are thirteen lakes, extensive wetlands, local creeks, and Saint Anthony Falls, which stands as the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi River. The city's vast municipal park system is connected by the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway, offering scenic pathways and green spaces that weave through the urban environment.

Indigenous Dakota people originally inhabited the region, regarding the local river confluence as their place of origin, while Ojibwe groups arrived in later centuries. European settlement accelerated following the establishment of Fort Snelling and subsequent treaties that displaced the native population. Leveraging the water power generated by Saint Anthony Falls, Minneapolis grew into a dominant industrial center during the nineteenth century, becoming a global leader in flour and lumber milling. This legacy as "Mill City" paved the way for modern developments in financial services, computing technology, manufacturing, and commercial enterprise.

Today, Minneapolis offers an array of premier arts and cultural destinations. Notable sites include the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Walker Art Center, and the Guthrie Theater. The city's music history is highlighted by the First Avenue nightclub, a famous performance venue for the artist Prince. Additionally, four professional sports teams play in the downtown core, and the main campus of the University of Minnesota forms a central academic hub within the city.

Public transportation throughout Minneapolis and the surrounding metropolitan region is managed by Metro Transit. For international and regional travel, the primary airport serving the area is located toward the southern boundary of the city limits.
