Why North Las Vegas

North Las Vegas is a suburban municipality located in Clark County, Nevada, situated directly northeast of Las Vegas within the Las Vegas Valley. Occupying over 101 square miles of terrain in the Mojave Desert, the city is framed by prominent nearby mountain ranges and features a landscape with very little surface water. Its environment is defined by a desert climate with hot summers that occasionally bring heavy monsoon thunderstorms. Winter days are typically mild, though nighttime temperatures frequently dip below freezing, and snowfall occurs only once every few years.

The region's recorded settlement began around 700 AD with Paiute Indians, followed centuries later by the establishment of a ranch in the 1860s by Conrad Kiel. The modern settlement was founded in 1919 by Thomas L. Williams, who constructed roads, wells, irrigation ditches, and power lines across a 160-acre tract. The town's early commercial development was marked by the 1924 opening of the Oasis Auto Court, which contained a grocery store, post office, campground, community center, and the area's single telephone. Influxes of Hoover Dam construction workers and the creation of a World War II aerial gunnery school—later known as Nellis Air Force Base—boosted the local population, leading to official municipal incorporation in May 1946.

Outdoor recreation is anchored by a park system comprising 34 developed parks that cover more than 475 acres. Six of these sites include water features such as ponds, swimming pools, and splash pads. The city also maintains 10 miles of paved trails along the Upper and Lower Las Vegas Wash. Connected to the regional Neon to Nature trail network, these pathways cater to hiking, cycling, and walking. Indoor fitness and community activities are hosted at local facilities, including the YMCA-operated SkyView Multi-Generational Recreation Center.

The cityscape encompasses master-planned residential communities like Aliante and Eldorado, alongside commercial areas such as the Apex Industrial Park. Local landmarks include Hebert Memorial Park, which commemorates a student military pilot who steered a failing jet away from an elementary school. Educational facilities include the 80-acre Cheyenne Campus of the College of Southern Nevada. Cultural resources are provided by the North Las Vegas Library District through three branches: the original North Las Vegas Library, the Aliante Library adjacent to Nature Discovery Park, and the Alexander Library, which borders a park with demonstration gardens and walking paths. General aviation services are available at the North Las Vegas Airport.
