Why Glendale

Glendale is a suburban city in Maricopa County, Arizona, situated adjacent to the state capital of Phoenix. Covering roughly 65 square miles of desert terrain, the area experiences a hot desert climate marked by dry, exceptionally warm summers and mild winter seasons. The Agua Fria River and New River flow southward along the city's western boundaries, while major roadways such as Grand Avenue, Loop 101, and Loop 303 connect the municipality to the surrounding regional metropolitan network.

Originally an expanse of desert, the community began to take shape following the 1885 completion of the 40-mile Arizona Canal, which brought water to the area. In the 1890s, early settlers established a temperance colony, and the town site was platted alongside a newly constructed railway that facilitated trade and access to building supplies. Agriculture flourished in the early 20th century through cotton farming, crop production, and industrial milling. During World War II, the region became a aviation training center with the construction of Thunderbird Field—which later hosted a global management school—and the establishment of nearby Luke Field. Rapid post-war population growth spurred the construction of civic infrastructure, parks, libraries, and public utilities across the city.

In recent decades, Glendale has developed into a destination known for sports, commercial districts, and entertainment complexes. The Westgate Entertainment District forms a central activity hub anchored by major sports venues. State Farm Stadium serves as the home field for the Arizona Cardinals football team and the annual Fiesta Bowl, featuring a signature roll-out natural grass field. Adjacent to it, Desert Diamond Arena hosts indoor football, concert performances, and annual street skateboarding competitions. Baseball fans also visit the city's Camelback Ranch facility, which hosts spring training operations for professional baseball teams.

Visitors to Glendale can explore a range of historical, cultural, and retail attractions. Preserved historic sites such as Sahuaro Ranch and Manistee Ranch offer glimpses into the area's agricultural past, while the Cerreta Candy Company provides factory tours. Outdoor destinations include Adobe Mountain Desert Park and the Elsie McCarthy Sensory Garden. The city is widely recognized for its antique shopping and large retail centers, such as the Arrowhead Towne Center mall. Community events held throughout the year include the Glendale Glitters holiday illumination display, the Glendale Chocolate Festival, and traditional gatherings celebrating folk heritage, jazz, and blues.
