Why Port St. Lucie

Port St. Lucie is a major city in St. Lucie County along Florida's Treasure Coast. Situated 125 miles southeast of Orlando and 113 miles north of Miami, it covers nearly 77 square miles. The municipality sits within a climate transition zone, featuring hot summers with low 90s averages, mild winters in the 70s, and annual rainfall of about 53.5 inches.

European settlement in the broader region traces back to 1566 near Jupiter Inlet, giving St. Lucie one of the oldest surviving European place names in the United States. In the early 1890s, a pioneer community called Spruce Bluff established a pineapple plantation, sawmill, school, and post office along the St. Lucie River. Today, the Spruce Bluff Preserve protects this history alongside a historic cemetery, outdoor observation points, hiking trails, canoe access, and a prehistoric Ais Indian mound. Modern Port St. Lucie grew rapidly following its incorporation in 1961, evolving from mid-century farms and fishing spots into a planned urban community with distinct neighborhoods like St. Lucie West and the 1950s-style town design of Tradition.

Visitors to Port St. Lucie can explore a wide range of outdoor recreation, cultural landmarks, and sports venues. The Spruce Bluff Preserve offers natural trails and historic sights along the river, while the North Fork of the St. Lucie River flows through the city. Major public gathering spots include Tradition Square, which hosts events throughout the year, and the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Event Center located along U.S. 1.

For sports enthusiasts, Port St. Lucie serves as the spring training base for the New York Mets at Clover Park, which also hosts the St. Lucie Mets and Florida Complex League Mets. Golfers can access the PGA Village complex, featuring 54 holes of golf alongside a historical center and learning facility. Additional local athletic facilities support competitive soccer and youth football programs.

Travelers can reach Port St. Lucie via major highway corridors. Interstate 95 runs through the western section of the city, while Florida's Turnpike travels through the eastern side. U.S. 1 provides a direct north-south commercial route across town, and local public transit is provided by Area Regional Transit buses.
