Why McKinney
McKinney serves as the county seat of Collin County in northern Texas, positioned approximately 32 miles north of Dallas within the greater Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. As one of the region's prominent suburban communities, the city covers roughly 63 square miles across the Texas blackland prairies. It features a humid subtropical climate marked by hot summers, mild rainy winters, and wet spring seasons influenced by winds from the Gulf Coast.
Established in the mid-nineteenth century, the municipality was named in honor of Collin McKinney, a key figure in the drafting of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Growth accelerated dramatically following the arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad in 1872. This rail connection transformed the settlement into a major agricultural and distribution hub for regional crops such as wheat, corn, and cotton. Over the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, the local economy transitioned from farming toward manufacturing and suburban commercial activity.
The city centers around its historic downtown district. At its middle stands the original Collin County Courthouse, built in the 1870s and remodeled in 1927. Today, the structure houses the McKinney Performing Arts Center, a multi-use venue hosting live theater, comedy shows, and musical performances. Nearby, the Collin County History Museum occupies a historic 1911 post office building, presenting educational exhibits dedicated to the heritage, products, and historic residents of the region.
Outdoor recreation is centered at places like the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary, a 289-acre preserve featuring 6.5 miles of walking trails, a 50-acre wetland area with a boardwalk, an outdoor amphitheater, and exhibits displaying natural history and live animals. To the north, Erwin Park covers more than 200 acres of rural land equipped with overnight campsites and unpaved mountain biking paths. The city also offers access to agricultural displays at the Collin County Farm Museum, a weekly Saturday morning farmers market at Chestnut Square Heritage Village, and two municipal public libraries.
Throughout the year, McKinney hosts several public gatherings, including the dog-centered Krewe of Barkus parade, the Arts in Bloom spring festival, the Texas Music Revolution concert event, an Independence Day parade and fireworks show, a multi-day Oktoberfest, and winter holiday celebrations. In sports, the city hosts the AT&T Byron Nelson golf tournament at TPC Craig Ranch, while its 12,000-seat local stadium serves as the venue for the college Division II National Championship football game.
