Peoria is a city in the U.S. state of Arizona, situated primarily within Maricopa County with its northern portion extending into Yavapai County. Positioned as a major suburb of Phoenix within the Salt River Valley, it covers nearly 179 square miles of land and water. The terrain rises from valley plains into northern mountain foothills, with the town taking its name from a Miami-Illinois phrase translated as "prairie fire," after settlers' original home of Peoria, Illinois.
