Fort Lauderdale is a prominent coastal destination in Florida, situated along the Atlantic Ocean approximately 30 miles north of Miami. Serving as the administrative seat and largest city in Broward County, it is internationally recognized for its extensive aquatic highways, earning it the title "Venice of America." The city is also widely renowned as the "yachting capital of the world," bolstered by a powerful marine sector and decades of nautical heritage.

Water defines much of the local experience, with 165 miles of inland canals crisscrossing the municipal boundaries, in addition to seven miles of continuous Atlantic beach front. Boating and maritime activities are central to the area's identity; the city contains 100 marinas and provides harbor to more than 50,000 registered yachts. Additionally, Port Everglades operates as one of the busiest cruise ports globally, processing nearly four million passengers each year.

The historical roots of the area extend back at least 2,000 years to the indigenous Tequesta people. Following European arrival, the territory shifted between Spanish and British governance before becoming known as the New River Settlement in the 19th century. In 1838, military outposts named after Major William Lauderdale were constructed during the Second Seminole War. Following the completion of the Florida East Coast Railroad, permanent growth surged, leading to the city's formal incorporation in 1911.

Covering a total area of 38.6 square miles—including nearly four square miles of inland water—Fort Lauderdale features more than 60 officially designated neighborhoods. The city shares borders with several coastal and inland municipalities, such as Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Dania Beach, Hollywood, and Wilton Manors. Beyond leisure and travel, the local economy is backed by real estate, finance, high technology, aerospace, and media production.

Characterized by a tropical rainforest climate, Fort Lauderdale averages roughly 3,000 hours of sunshine annually and maintains an average year-round temperature of 75.5 °F (24.2 °C). The region experiences a warm, predominantly dry season from November through April, which offers comfortable weather and abundant sun. The wet season runs from May to October, bringing elevated humidity, warmer conditions, and frequent afternoon rain showers.
