Why Rancho Cucamonga
Rancho Cucamonga is a Southern California city located in San Bernardino County's Inland Empire, approximately 37 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Set on an alluvial plain just south of the San Gabriel Mountains and Angeles National Forest, the city offers clear views of Cucamonga Peak. It is bordered by Upland to the west, Ontario to the south, and Fontana and Interstate 15 to the east. The city's distinct name was notably popularized in popular culture by The Jack Benny Program.
Indigenous Tongva or Kich settlers established a village in the area around 1200 AD near present-day Red Hill, naming it Kukamonga, a term meaning "sandy place." Following its inclusion in the Spanish Mission System during the 18th century, the land was granted in 1839 to Tubercio Tapia, who established California's first winery. In 1858, John Rains acquired the estate, where the 1860 Casa de Rancho Cucamonga was built, a historic home now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1977, the unincorporated areas of Alta Loma, Cucamonga, and Etiwanda voted to merge and form the modern city.
Several local landmarks highlight the city's multicultural history. Chinese laborers constructed essential infrastructure, including 1887 irrigation tunnels in Cucamonga Canyon, commemorated today by the Chinatown House. Additionally, the historic Our Lady of Mt. Carmel site stands as a reminder of early Mexican agricultural workers who tended local olive, citrus, peach, and grape crops.
For recreation and entertainment, visitors can attend minor-league baseball games at LoanMart Field, home stadium of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Another major destination is Victoria Gardens, an open-air lifestyle center constructed on a street grid designed to mimic a traditional downtown. This district includes retail shops, eateries, a 12-screen movie theater, and an outdoor sports outfitters superstore. It also houses the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center, which incorporates a municipal library branch and the 570-seat Lewis Playhouse.
Rancho Cucamonga features a hot-summer Mediterranean climate marked by long, hot summers, comfortable winters, and an average of 287 sunny days annually. Convenient travel access to the area is provided by nearby interstate highways and Ontario International Airport.
