Pembroke Pines is a major suburban municipality situated in southern Broward County, Florida, approximately 22 miles north of Miami. Positioned within the Miami metropolitan region, the city borders neighboring communities such as Hollywood, Miramar, Davie, Cooper City, and Southwest Ranches, with the Everglades stretching along its western edge. The area experiences a tropical monsoon climate characterized by hot, wet summers and warm, dry winters. The residential sector situated west of Interstate 75 is commonly referred to as West Pines.
Human presence in the region dates back thousands of years to early Native American populations. The modern settlement originated as an agricultural district home to numerous dairy farms, including the former Waldrep Dairy Farm. The municipality's name is derived from Sir Edward J. Reed, a British Member of Parliament who purchased regional land in 1882, combined with the pine trees growing near Pembroke Road. Officially incorporated in 1960, Pembroke Pines experienced massive population growth during the 1990s following Hurricane Andrew, as many residents moved north from southern Miami-Dade County.

The Pembroke Lakes Mall stands on land formerly occupied by dairy farming, while C.B. Smith Park provides outdoor space alongside historic landmarks like the site of the former Hollywood Sportatorium. Higher education is well represented in the area, with local campuses for institutions including Broward College, Florida International University, Barry University, Keiser University, and Florida Career College. Additionally, the municipality operates its own extensive charter school system.
Transportation across Pembroke Pines is facilitated by a well-connected roadway system and nearby aviation facilities. Primary expressways and thoroughfares crossing the city include Interstate 75, Florida's Turnpike, U.S. Route 27, Pines Boulevard, and University Drive, with local bus service provided by Broward County Transit. For air travel, general aviation operates out of the local North Perry Airport, while commercial flights are handled by nearby Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport.
