Why Hollywood
Hollywood is a municipality in Broward County, Florida, situated within the Miami metropolitan area in the southeastern portion of the state. Encompassing roughly 30.8 square miles, of which more than three square miles are covered by water, it ranks as the third-largest city in Broward County. The city features approximately five to six miles of Atlantic Ocean beachfront, which is briefly interrupted by a section belonging to Dania Beach.
The settlement was conceived as a planned community during the Florida real-estate boom of the 1920s. Platted on land owned by Joseph Wesley Young in 1921 and officially incorporated in 1925, the initial development involved extensive land clearing and street grading. Infrastructure projects included two yacht basins designed by General George Washington Goethals that connected the city to the Intracoastal Waterway. Hollywood soon became a popular winter retreat for northern residents, and by 1960 contained thousands of single-family residences and hotel units. The area has historically endured major weather events, including severe destruction from the 1926 Miami hurricane and impacts from Hurricane Irma in 2017.
Hollywood holds cultural importance as the federal headquarters of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, established in 1957. A landmark 1981 decision by the United States Supreme Court affirmed the tribe's right to run high-stakes bingo in the municipality. This legal precedent paved the way for gaming and resort developments, such as the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, which opened in 2004 and added a landmark guitar-shaped hotel tower complete with a pool and manmade lake in 2019.
Points of interest and facilities in the city include the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, established in 1975, as well as historic accommodation properties like the Diplomat Hotel, which opened in 1958. Economically, the city hosts the corporate headquarters of companies such as HEICO and the Invicta Watch Group. Transport to and from the area has long been served by the neighboring Broward County International Airport, which first opened in 1948.
The local environment is defined by a tropical rainforest climate. Weather conditions feature long, hot, humid, and rainy summer periods, contrasted with short, warm, and predominantly dry winter seasons.
